as you would have them do unto you. The Golden Rule from Luke 3:16.
Though I love its underlying message, it is wont to backfire.
The rule, in its simplest sense, guides people to treat their enemies/dissenters the way THEY would want to be treated, NOT the way their enemies/dissenters would treat them.....
And this works seemingly most of the time.
But what about somebody who doesn't like being treated the way somebody else would WANT to be treated?
1) Some of us WANT to be judged when we're doing things we "reason" aren't good. What if my best friend doesn't intervene to tell me how awful what I'm about to do is? Why aren't you confronting me? YOU'RE VIOLATING THE GOLDEN RULE!
2) Some of us DO NOT want to be judged when we're doing things we "reason" aren't good. What if my best friend valiantly attempts to convince me that what I'm about to do is awful? Why are you judging me! YOU'RE VIOLATING THE GOLDEN RULE!
Like many issues in life, society tries to place complicated issues in a simple "black and white" fabric.
